Microscope 489 is labelled with ‘BRITEX UNIVERSAL ACHRO PROVER x8” and should be dated to the mid-20th century. This instrument would be used for counting threads in fabrics (the number of threads per unit of length provides evidence of a higher quality of cloth). Britex (Scientific Instruments) was a company trading from 523-4 Bank Chambers, 329 High Holborn, London, selling several optical and other scientific instruments.
