Anthony Pastorelli made chronometers and barometers at 4 Cross Street, Hatton Garden, London. He seems to have taken over a business started by his father, Fortunato Pastorelli, who began as a glass blower before employing these skills to make barometers. Anthony’s son Francis in turn succeeded him at 4 Cross Street in the mid 1840s and had additional premises at 208 Piccadilly between 1859 – 1875, producing different types of scientific instruments (apparently including microscopes, although there are not many instruments signed by this maker). The business continued under different names and partnerships into the 20th century. Microscope 104 is labelled ‘F. Pastorelli, 208 Piccadilly, London’, although the inscription is barely readable, and can be dated to c. 1870. The instrument contains an unusual oblong-shaped mirror, which is probably not original.
